Past Projects: Jayawickreme Foundation, Sri Lanka Up to end 2007 EDUCATION,
POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND TSUNAMI PROJECTS 1 Three free of charge English tuition schools: for 50 children in Jayawickremepura, 400 children in Denipitiya and 120 children in Playmobil School in Polwatte. Tamil lessons are given too. 2 Three charge-free Kindergarten: for 30 children in Denipitiya and two for 35 children each in the Playmobil School in Polwatte. 3 Serendib Children and Youth Library in Denipitiya. Poverty Alleviation: 4 Day-Care-Center for 40 old people, who are traumatized, neglected and lonely. 5 Donations for needy old people like temple cloths, spectacles, tea flasks etc. 6 Housing for the rural poor and needy: 46 houses completed. 7 Micro Financing Scheme with more than 1000 members up to now. 8 Lively hood projects for more than 600 people. The beneficiaries are women and youths. 9 Helping financially neglected places of worship at the request of villagers: badly needed piped water facilities; toilet facilities; erecting of staircase for pilgrims to climb up to sacred Bo-tree, renovation work etc. 10 Spectacle donations, more than 1800 second hand spectacles donated to old people. 11 Ad hoc help for needy people i.e. financial assistance for medical treatment, operations, hearing aid, wheel chairs, disabled toilets, fishing nets, etc. 12 Donations for Sunday School-, School- and Kindergarten children: various donations of school equipment, bags, Sunday school- and school uniforms, dance costumes for competitions etc. 13 Equipment for 30 rural sport clubs Tsunami Projects: 14 Tsunami housing out of buffer zone: 53 Tsunami Houses completed. 15 Small Business Re-starter Projects for small businesses destroyed by Tsunami, 7 have been helped. 16 Fishing Boats with out board motor & netting. Job facilities for 05 families per boat. 13 Boats donated. 17 Kindergarten and Sunday School for 550 pupils and a Community Hall completed. 18 Equipment for
30 costal sport clubs destroyed by the Tsunami.

June 2002 – Launch of English School for 45 poor children out of 3 villages on Charley Mount Estate - funded by German charity “Hilfsbruecke”. August 2002 - Inauguration of spice grinding mill to generate income for at least 15 poor, unemployed families in Galbokka-Weligama – funded by German charity “Hilfsbruecke”. October 2002 – Foundation stone laying for 7 houses - funded by the German Embassy’s Micro Project Programme. |

April 2003 – Spectacle donation for 125 poor village people in the AGA Division Welipitiya. June 2003 - Spectacle donation for 100 poor people in the AGA’s Division Welipitiya. July 2003 – Inauguration of the 7 houses for poor people financed by the German Embassy by the German Ambassador H.E. Juergen Elias. September 2003 – 1day seminar on civic education for rural youths – funded by German Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Sri Lankan Institute for Democracy and Leadership. September 2003 – Donation of chairs, tables and a barbwire fence to a day care center for mentally handicapped boys in the Welipitiya AGA Division – funded by German Charity “Hilfsbruecke”. October 2003 - Stage II of the poverty alleviation programme on income generation and self-employment for rural youths - funded by German Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation. November 2003 – A rural banking system was inaugurated after a 21 day poverty alleviation seminar on income generation and self-employment for rural youth following above October programme. December 2003 – Foundation stone laying ceremony for 4 houses – donated by private donors. January

Kohonugamuwa Lankatilleke Temple, Weligama. February 2004 – Donation of sewing –, choir rope making machines for women self-employment project and roofing sheets – funded by the International Christmas Charity Bazaar. March 2004 – Donation of roofing sheets for poor families March 2004 - Foundation stone laying ceremony for 5 houses - financed by German Embassy.
April 2004 - Opening of 7 houses – donated by private donors. May 2004 – 3rd year of free English school May 2004 – Spectacle donation for 60 poor village people at Kohonugamuwa Lankatilleke Temple, Weligama. October 2004 – Laying of foundation stone for a community hall at Kohunugamuwa – financed by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. October 2004 – Laying of foundation stones for 3 houses donated by private donors. November 2004 – Spectacle donation for 135 people in Welihinda. December 2004 – Opening of community hall financed by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and opening of the 3 houses sponsored by private donors. December 2004 – Tsunami relief aid for more than 2200 homeless people in 6 camps near Charley Mount Estate in Denipitiya, Welihinda, and Udukawe. January 2005 – Continuation of Tsunami relief aid for more than 2200 homeless people in 6 camps near Charley Mount Estate. February 2005 - Tsunami relief aid in coastal villages where affected people are living in tents, semi permanent structures after vacating the camps. February 2005 - Donations of school items school bags etc. to school children and kindergarten children, whose parents lost their source of income due to Tsunami. February 2005 - Successful start of financing program to help small entrepreneurs to rejuvenate their businesses, which were destroyed by Tsunami. February 2005 – Spectacle donation to 120 people in Galbokka. March 2005 – May 2005 Continuation of relief aid, donations to people in need, children and helping small entrepreneurs to rejuvenate their businesses. May 2005 – Spectacle donation to 82 people in Denipitiya. May 2005 – 4th year of a free English school for 45 poor village children in Jayawickremepura - financed by the “Hilfsbruecke”. June 2005 – Foundation stone laying of 4 Tsunami houses financed by Rotary Club Remagen-Sinzig (1), Axel Wagner (2) and City of Plettenberg (1). June 2005 - Donation of 64 drawer cabinets to all homeless families in the Pelena camp financed by private donors. June 2005 – Sunday school cloth donation to 645 children in various temples. June 2005 – Donations of milk powder and toys to poor kindergarten children. June 2005 – Donation of 2 fishing boats sponsored by “Fischerdorf hilft Fischerdorf” Fedderwardersiel. July 2005 – Foundation stone laying of 1 Tsunami house financed by the City of Plettenberg. July 2005 – Opening of a Free Englisch school for 90 children financed by the “Aktion Rheinland Pfalz hilft”. July 2005 – Foundation stone laying of a Kindergarten/Sunday school cum community hall for 550 children at the Gangaramaya Temple Pelena-Weligama financed by “Quickborn hilft”. July 2005 – Donation of 2 fishing boats sponsored by “Fischerdorf hilft Fischerdorf” Fedderwardersiel (1) and Peter Henlein Realschule Nurmberg (1). July 2005 – up to date 850 poor people have been enrolled in our successfully run rural banking system. July 2005 – up to date 235 poor people have started small businesses with the help of the Jayawickreme Foundation. |
